Tell us what you think about the zince fence in town. Do you think if we removed the zince fence there would be reduction in crime in the inner city

Zinc fence is the one of the reasons for crime in Spanish Town (inner city or ghetto). If the government removed the zince fence, they will be able to monitor what is taking place in the home. Most of the gun they hide it behind the Zince fence. I think Mr. Golding should look at that in his portfolio in the New Year.

I think this is a good site. The government should have site similar to this where we can blog and share our views about the country. They need need to listen to us.

We respect your comment about the zinc fences. Look at all the greats that have come from behind the zinc fences and have been a credit both here and the world at large. It is not the zinc fences, it is what is behind those fences. Don't assume all those behind the fences are carrying "guns". Check the cement walls too and what's behind them. Too many people from outside Jamaica have come up with the brilliant idea of tearing down zinc fences. Let them come with the idea of going behind the fences and pulling out the little ones and teaching them to read and write, or instead of pulling them out. Go behind the fences and set up schools. "Instructing a child is like engraving a stone".

The use of corrugated steel (Zinc to us)for home privacy does not of itself breed crime....however it does indicate a lack of civic pride and respect for community since YES....IT IS AN UGLY EYESORE which marks the geographical territory as a ghetto, which (strangely enough) some Jamaicans wear as a badge of honour. Zinc fences, as a general rule, are almost always accompanied by poverty, antisocial behavior (not to mention health hazards in the form of open drains, rodent and insect infestation).
So why should their demolition be debatable?
Some would argue that it is has some cultural identity to it or that it serves as a cheap barrier between neighbours (I personally think a green hedge might cost less). In our own urban social evolution, those who have an interest in criminal enterprise and ghetto culture see it as a their refuge. Sad to say that this "gullyside mentality" is all too common in Spanish Town.

Afterall.....ow u a go tell di man dem from Clans an di Order dat di zinc ting affi come dung....a dis yu waan dis....

I discovered this blog only by chance. A very good idea and I applaud the developers.

I am however disappointed by the fact that there exits so few posts...maybe it reflects the apathy of us, the people of Spanish Town.
